San Francisco, CA- A new ban on Gmail has started in Iran last week. The ban is affecting all the internet users there, all 35 million of them. The ban is a response to the company’s reaction of an anti-Islam film. The new ban will extend to Google’s search engine soon, and Iran will create its own search engine.
Internet users have encountered problems in response to the ban.
Hussein Garrousi, a member of the parliament committee of industry was quoted in the Aftab Daily saying, "Some problems have emerged through the blocking of Gmail." He also added that a questioning of the minister of telecommunications could take place should the ban not be lifted.
This sentiment resonates as Deputy Minister Ali Hakim Javadi, who states that Iranian authorities are contemplating lifting the ban; however, they still want to introduce two alternatives that are domestically made and run.
These two alternatives are called The Fakhr, which means “Pride,” and The Fajr, which means “Dawn.” Both are email services, according to The Aftab Daily.
It is unclear if Iran has the finances to keep these websites running and functioning. It is also unclear if the websites will be used at all as Iranian users are trying to bypass the ban.
The country has long signaled its desire to create an internet system that is more on par with its ethics and beliefs.
In the meantime, Iranian internet users have been trying to find ways around the blocks and hurdles put on Gmail, Google, and Youtube in Iran.
