(Aviation-NewsWire.Com, November 09, 2012 ) Melbourne, Australia -- The Melbourne Tullamarine Airport has said both international and domestic travelers have increased by 6% in the past three months compared to prior similar periods.
International passengers have risen by 4%, while domestic travelers are up 7%, according to a Melbourne Airport statement on Friday.
The largest increase is visitors from Hong Kong, which have risen 23% this quarter.
An increase of 15.3% of Chinese passport holders has been recorded, while Fijians traveling to the area has risen by 18.8%, according to the airport.
"Victoria's position as the premier destination in Australia for business, education or tourism has been reinforced by the commencement of new international services, with more to come in coming months," Melbourne Airport chief executive Chris Woodruff said.
Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport, the total of passengers has risen 6.2% in September alone compared to prior month’s numbers.
Sydney Airport chief executive Kerrie Mather stated that a 5.6% growth in domestic passengers marked increases for the fourth straight month.
"The result benefited from robust capacity growth, in particular by Jetstar and Tiger, with each airline adding more than 100,000 seats relative to September 2011," Ms. Mather said in a statement.
The Sydney Airport passenger totals were up 7.2% in September. Ms. Mather stated that September is considered a leisure travel month.
The upturn in the spending may have to do with the those around the world feeling that the global market, while not booming, is stabilizing enough to allow for travel. In recent years’ individuals around the world have been tightening their belt in countries that were so recently considered to be free-to-spend.
The concern over housing troubles, banking runs, and market crashes or faltering likely kept many from traveling both domestically and internationally. With the Asian market remaining strong in China and the U.S. and U.K. markets at least holding their own, more individuals are willing to spend a bit and travel abroad.
