(Aviation-NewsWire.Com, November 11, 2012 ) Victoria, Australia -- Chief executive Justin Giddings is describing the approval to expand Victoria’s Avalon Airport to service international passengers as a win for the region and Victoria. The federal government is amending the airport’s lease to include a new international terminal at the airport. The decision clears the way for Avalon Airport to become the state’s second international airport.
The long delayed approval for the construction of the international terminal will create greater investment from major airlines. Premier Ted Baillieu stated,
“This was a major roadblock we highlighted when we committed to support Avalon Airport becoming Victoria's second international airport in 2008."
The lease amendment will allow Avalon Airport to smoothly transition into the construction phase of creating its new international terminal without bureaucratic red tape. The amendment also shortens the time-frame between an approved agreement and when flights can begin.
Located 55 km southwest of the Melbourne CBD, the new terminal will cost $15 million, measure 10,000 square metres, and require no major development plan.
The international status upgrade will also include the Victorian government's financial commitment to build a rail link connection to Avalon Airport to meet increased airport access and passenger demand.
The $50 million government commitment will cover design, planning, and land acquisition. Another $3 million will utilized to build an aviation fuel pipeline with a direct connection between the airport and Shell Geelong.
Mr. Giddings stated that the international terminal will boost the economy of the region as well as attract tourism opportunities.
