  • Commercial Aircraft Avionic Systems Market: Size, Competitors Strategy, Regional Analysis and Growth | 2023

(Aviation-NewsWire.Com, October 07, 2017 ) Aircraft avionics systems are an integral part of aircraft, needed for smooth flight operation, which reduces the burden on the pilot and the dependency on ground control. In-flight aircraft warning, navigation and control systems are gaining acceptance and popularity in the regions with increasing air traffic and aging ground-based infrastructure.

The market for aircraft avionics system is expected to grow faster with new technologies in advanced avionics made available for commercial aviation. The aviation industry is currently under an expansion process to accommodate the new additional traffic since most ground based systems at airports have already reached their limit of handling traffic. An increase of an additional 4 billion passengers, annually, is seen in the future and the present airport ground control systems are not equipped to handle this influx. Avionics installed in the aircraft is the only possible affordable solution to keep up with this fast-paced growth.

The commercial aviation market would need 11,000 new aircraft to handle the growing traffic by 2020, and hence 11,000 new avionics systems. Most of these systems will be for narrow body aircraft followed by widebody and regional jets.

The market demand for very large body aircraft – A380, B777, is limited, yet the demand for these aircraft is expected to reach at least 400 by 2020. A very large body aircraft houses complex systems to keep track of the aircraft safety, reduce empty weight, and also provide operational ease. The A380 employs an IMA architecture avionics used in advanced military aircraft. These systems were developed by Thales Group, Diehl Aerospace, and Airbus group, and implemented in ARINC 664. This has enabled reduced crew training cost, improved fly-by-wire flight controls and glass cockpit, including three multi-function displays that provide easy to use interface to the flight management system. The improved avionics systems in the A350 model can accommodate future advances in navigation with a capacity to upload new software and combine data from multiple sources and sensors. The A350 IMA manages up to 40 functions compared to 23 in A380, reducing maintenance and weight. The Boeing 747, with similar size, houses a relatively inferior but advanced avionics systems developed by Rockwell Collins and Honeywell. The new model of Boeing 747-400ER is equipped with active matrix liquid crystal displays by Rockwell Collins. Some major operators of Boeing 747 switched to the Airbus A380 model, citing lower-line maintenance cost, higher-capacity, and better efficiency.

The market is segmented by aircraft type (narrowbody, widebody, very large body and rotary wing), subsystem (flight control systems, electrical & emergency systems, communication and navigation, flight management system and health monitoring systems and other systems), by fitment (forward fit and retrofit), and by geography.

The market for avionics systems in commercial aircraft - OEMs, is based in the US and Europe. The aftersales market is dominated in China, India, UAE and other Asian and Middle Eastern countries. China is the next biggest market for civil aviation regarding passenger traffic, closely followed by India and led by the US and the UK.
