  • More Electric Aircraft Market Market Recent Study Segments, Future Growth, Business Prospects

    (Aviation-NewsWire.Com, January 24, 2018 ) Market Highlights:
More electric aircraft (MEA) are advanced next-generation aircraft that use more electrical systems to reduce the non-propulsive power systems such as mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. This has resulted in a reduction in the weight of the aircraft, leading to a low cost of ownership, usage of less fuel, a reduction in emissions, increased reliability, and other added benefits.

Tremendous progress in the aviation industry with the development of the MEA, such as the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, Airbus A380, and Lockheed F35 airplanes was seen in last 15 years. In these aircraft, the pneumatic or hydraulic actuation systems have been replaced by the electric actuators, which make the aircraft lighter in weight and reduce fuel consumption. In addition, Airbus plans to develop 100 passenger electric aircraft during the forecast period.

In MEA, the pneumatic and hydraulic actuators are replaced with electric actuation systems. This substitution results in higher electrical power demand than that arising from conventional approaches. For example, the total electric power generation on Boeing 787 is above 1 MW, whereas a corresponding conventional aircraft consumes only one-fourth this power. Cooling and dynamic control of power generators and converters is profoundly challenged by the rising electrical power demand.

Improvement of power electronics and its associated cooling and control units will continuously reduce the weight of these electrical components. However, in some cases, the force density generated by the hydraulic actuator hydraulic flight control actuation can be 15 times more than the force density generated by an electric actuator, which is unavoidable at component and box levels. Moreover, the weight of the power electronics box and the inflight technologies increase the weight of an aircraft.

Novel cooling and control units, power electronics, and new system level design challenge the reliability, safety, strength, and certification of new MEA. This adds to the risks related to resources, technicalities, expense, and schedule of the development and investment in MEA.

More Electric Aircraft Market – Competitive Analysis

In-house manufacturing capabilities, a global footprint network, product offerings, investment in R&D, newer technology, and a strong client base have become the key areas in which to have an edge over competitors. The global economic recovery, the growth of the aviation industry, new aircraft orders, R&D and investments in fuel-efficient engines, and the lucrative retrofit market have created an opportunity for aerospace industry players to compete and grow.
The global MEA market is highly competitive and vendors compete on the basis of cost, product quality, reliability, and aftermarket service. To survive and succeed in such an intensely competitive environment, it is crucial for vendors to provide cost-effective and high-quality MEA with the latest technology and materials.
Airbus and Boeing are the two leading vendors in manufacturing MEA for commercial and military markets. Their focus is primarily on reducing the usage of fuel in the aircraft by increasing the use of electric systems to perform the majority of the aircraft functions.
